Key issues

The six positive outcomes that form our strategic framework capture the issues identified by stakeholders as most important to society and our business. They allow us to focus on where we can make the biggest difference.

When we developed our 2020 sustainability strategy in 2010, we reviewed our impacts to ensure we directed our resources to the areas that mattered most. The review involved consultation with the Board, our business units and our Sustainability Advisory Committee, as well as conclusions from regular risk reviews.

Independent professional services company Bureau Veritas reviewed the development process for the Carillion plc 2020 sustainability vision and strategy. Forum for the Future supported Carillion in the development of the strategy by interviewing appropriate internal and external stakeholders, and facilitating workshops to help identify the key material issues for the Group and to help foster the aim of Carillion in their mission to ‘make tomorrow a better place’.

It is Bureau Veritas’s opinion, based on the assessments made and the evidence reviewed, that the development process and the strategy itself address the key sustainability issues for Carillion and its customers and that key areas, known as the ‘six positive outcomes’, have been appropriately targeted and progress will be duly monitored. The strategy is strongly aligned to the business strategy for the Group and its aim is to become fully embedded in the culture of the organisation.

Our six positive outcomes support our overall mission and business objectives. We have clear targets for each outcome to ensure that we can review our performance each year and deliver our goals for 2020. Read more in Targets and progress.

In 2012, we further developed our Sustainability Leadership Plan, the global framework that splits the six outcomes into two levels – ‘Foundation’ and ’Infinity & Beyond’ – and supports the business units in achieving the key performance indicators (KPIs).
